Lawrence Kelso Frank's Proto Ayresian Dichotomy: A Note
2003
This paper explores Lawrence Kelso Frank's contribution to the evolution of the so called Veblenian dichotomy. According to this apprach, peculiar to the institutional framework of every economic system is an absolute and irreconcilable tension between the dynamic and progressive force of technology on the one side, and the static and conservative structure of ceremony and institutions on the other. The first section examines Frank's adoption of behavioristic psychology in connection with the main changes which were taking place in the American social sciences during the first decades of the twentieth century. The second section describes Frank's theory of institutional change, emphasizing …
Aldo Visalberghi and the italian School System in the Post-War Period
2021
The contribution aims to propose a reflection on the italian pedagogist and academic Aldo Visalberghi (1919-2007) who, influenced by the pedagogical theories of John Dewey (1859-1952), has critically analyzed the italian school of the immediate post-war period, which he himself called extremely authoritarian and, for this reason, demanding to live a change that transformed and improved the quality of teaching and learning of young italians. Through a critical reading of some bibliographical sources such as Scuola aperta published in 1960 and Insegnare ed apprendere. Un approccio evolutivo of 1988, it will be highlighted how Visalberghi offered to educators and teachers of his time suggestio…
John Dewey’s notion of social intelligence
2019
This chapter focuses on Deweyan understanding of intelligence as fundamentally social. This understanding differs from the common conceptions of intelligence as a feature of an isolated individual and/or as a possession of an elite. Starting with a look at the relevance of reconceptualizing intelligence, the chapter continues by describing how, according to Dewey’s theory, intelligence forms, manifests and cumulates in interactions. It then discusses the presumable implications of Dewey’s theory in terms of the contextuality of intelligent action, the importance of taking relevant experience-based information into account, the use of a particular method of inquiry, and modification of educa…

La scuola al servizio della democrazia: i princìpi ispiratori di John Dewey per l’interpretazione di Lamberto Borghi
2021
2020
2021
This contribution aims to reflect on the concept of individualism as presented by John Dewey who used this word to indicate the unique and unrepeatable part of man, differentiating the “old individualism” from the “new individualism”. Taking into consideration the Deweyan theories of the first half of the twentieth century, with particular reference to the 1930 writing The Individualism Old and New, it is noted that Dewey criticized the existence of an “old individualism” intended as an emblem of egocentrism and of asociality, the causes of which were traceable to the advent of industrialization, social stratification and capitalism. According to him, these were people without a solid ident…
THE SCHOOL AT THE SERVICE OF THE SOCIETY: CONSEQUENCES FOR THE "NEW WORLD"
2022
Introduction In this article I shall seek to demonstrate the remarkable contemporary relevance of John Dewey’s pedagogic ideas, found in publications such as My Pedagogic Creed, The School and Society and Democracy and Education. Through a brief analysis of these works I will highlight how much Dewey believed in a school that is connected to society and which places itself at its service, contributing to the birth or consolidation of a democracy understood not just as a form of government, but as a way of life. In view of this analysis and in light of the present pandemic caused by COVID-19, I will consider the importance today of the school. Following Dewey, I will take into account the ro…

AbstractIn this article we examine first-year student teachers’ possibilities to become interested in professional issues in teacher education. We study the phenomenon of becoming interested among first-year student teachers via three different kinds of data. We analysed our data through John Dewey’s definition of interest, where a person has an interest if s/he is actively keen on some object that has personal meaning for her/him. According to our data, student teachers adopt an object of interest that teacher educators provide. Learners found it difficult to find the objects of interests by themselves, and it was exceptional for them to find personal meaning and an active state of interes…
